LEESBURG – The 2012 FHSAA Class 7A District 4 schedule begin last night for the Fightin’ Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High School. The Jackets entered the 2012 campaign with hopes of ending it’s 20 year playoff win drought. Leesburg hosted it’s South Lake County rival Clermont East Ridge for the first time in five seasons at Leesburg Memorial Field at Hubert O. Dabney Stadium.
East Ridge capitalized on another slow start by the Jackets offense and outlasted Leesburg 49-48 in overtime. Bad weather had both teams struggling in the first half of the game. The last time the Yellow Jackets have lost back to back games at Hubert O. Dabney Stadium was during the 2004 season. The loss has virtually eliminated Leesburg from the 2012 FHSAA Playoffs barring a late season meltdown by East Ridge and Orlando Maynard Evans.
Leesburg found itself in the hole 14-0 early in the first quarter of the game and had to play catchup football the rest of the way. The Black Jackets defense gave up 49 points the most given up by Leesburg since November 11, 2005, when Tim Tebow led St. Augustine Nease to a 63-20 win over the Jackets.
For the second year in a row a Leesburg defender has had a pick 6 called back in a crucial district game. Senior OLB/P/RB Austin Walker picked off a pass early in the first quarter and returned it for a score only to have clipping called on the return. On the very next play East Ridge picked off a Leesburg pass regaining momentum in the contest.
East Ridge saw something in the Jackets Kickoff return team and elected to kick line drives all night. The strategy worked as East Ridge recovered two of the kicks setting up easy scores for the Knights. Leesburg got a spark from its special team also with senior Jeremy Jones blocking a punt for the second week in a row for the Jackets. The Jackets went into halftime trailing 21-20
At the beginning of the second half East Ridge jumped out to a 35-30 lead. They would stretch the lead to 42-20 before Leesburg scored 28 unanswered points to take a 48-42 lead in overtime. On the extra point attempt there were only 10 players on the field forcing the Jackets to take a timeout. After the timeout the snap was low on the extra point attempt and the kick was short leaving the score at 48-42 in Leesburg’s favor.
The Jackets defense forced East Ridge into a 4th and goal from the 10 yard line in overtime. East Ridge converted on fourth down to tie the game. The extra point attempt was good and East Ridge had come into Dabney Stadium and stole another win from the Jackets. East Ridge (2-2, 1-0) is now tied with Orlando Evans for the district lead. The loss dropped Leesburg to 2-2 (0-1) and they will face St. Cloud for homecoming Friday night.
